OK. In a nutshell, instead of buying an external hard drive, buy an external hard drive 😁
It just has to be modular: a regular HDD with a SATA connector + a HDD enclosure with a USB port.
Avoid external HDDs that have a USB connector soldered to it.
But I doubt USB controllers fry more often than the HDD mechanisms.
In case the HDD is faulty, having a separate USB controller doesn't help. Unplugging the HDD and hooking it up to the motherboard of the PC won't help: it's faulty, to begin with...

Great little QR code generator. Will purchase, but logos are not implemented very well and I'd like the ability to rename the QR codes without affecting the content.

I had signed up with GPT-o4, Open AI to purchase tokens for the voice use in Vovsoft Text to Speech program, but isn't it true that each time I use their API Key it is being used up and I will eventually have to buy more tokens? Thanks for any helpful info on this. AJ.
